A popular drought-tolerant North American native prairie flower, echinacea (coneflower) have been prized as a medicinal plant for thousands of years. A hallmark of xeriscape gardening, echinacea can tolerate long periods of drought, as well as flooding rains, and are often utilized in prairie restorations or as a low-maintenance bedding plant.

Historically, the plant was only available in pink varieties (Purple Coneflower), but with more recent experiments in breeding, echinacea are now available in brialliant colors from yellow to pink, to red or even pale green or white.
