Vines may be classified as either clinging or climbing, depending upon their manner of growth. Clinging vines climb by attaching themselves to surfaces. Generally, they do not need additional support. Climbing vines spread by twining around a support structure such as wires or a trellis. Regardless of the type, most vines do best with a little support during the first few years after planting. The ultimate height of vines may be maintained by conscientious pruning.
