Plants: Ferns

Ferns Ferns are a group of plants that do not have flowers or seeds. Ferns have fronds (large type leaf) and spores which work like seeds but are not formed like seeds. These plants are not always found growing in moist shade they live in a wide variety of places, high mountain elevations to dry desert areas, standing water or sunny fields. Ferns can stand alone as a specimen or work as an evergreen groundcover in dry shade or part sun. Fern foliage colors range from dark shiny green and light apple green to various multi-colored combinations of silver, red and burgundy. They can be used with perennials and grasses or by themselves, when used as a groundcover along pond edges and brooks they create a cool carpet of green. Other plants that will work in combination with ferns are Dicentra, Hosta, Tiarella, Heuchera, Phlox stolonifera and Iris.

Ferns include, but are not limited to the following:
	Adiantum pedatum Maidenhair Fern has very delicate finely textured foliage, it spreads slowly and prefers a moist area. 24-30”height.	Athyrium filix-femina Lady Fern will grow in moist areas but also can take fairly dry soil. 24-30” height.
	Athyrium filix-femina ‘Cristata’ Crested Lady Fern can take moist to fairly dry shade. 24-30”height.	Athyrium filix-femina ‘Lady in Red’ Lady in Red tolerates dry shade, it’s lacy fringed fronds have burgundy stems. 24-30”height.
	Athyrium goeringianum (niponicum) ‘Burgundy Lace’ Burgundy Lace Japanese Painted Fern, this beautiful fern has lacey mounding fronds that are colored with silver, burgundy and red. 12-15”height.	Athyrium goeringianum (niponicum) ‘Pictum’ Japanese Painted Fern, gently arching blue/green fronds with silver and maroon coloring. 12-24” height.
	Blechnum spicant Deer Fern, this fern prefers to be in moist shade. 20-24”height.	Dennstaedtia punctiloba Hayscented Fern, this is an excellent groundcover fern that spreads rapidly and can tolerate some sun. 24-30”height.
	Dryopteris cristata Crested Shield Fern, dark green lacey fronds excellent for woodland gardens. 12-30”height.	Dryopteris erthrosora Autumn Fern, young fronds are a beautiful bronzy red turning to glossy green. 12-24”height.
	Dryopteris filix-mas Male Fern, erect graceful habit, likes drier locations. 24-30” height.	Dryopteris marginalis Marginal Shield Fern Bluish green frond. 12-24”height evergreen.
	Matteuccia struthiopteris Ostrich Fern, dark green erect fronds, are tall and graceful, this fern likes a moist area. 36-48”height.	Onoclea sensibilis Sensitive Fern, excellent fern for moist soils. 24-48”height.
	Osmunda regalis Royal Fern, new growth on this fern is coppery brown, it thrives on pond edges and by brooks. 36-48”height.	Polystichum acrostichoides Christmas Fern, dark green leathery looking fronds, this is a nice evergreen groundcover. 12-24” height.
	Polystichum setiferum (angulare) Soft Shield Fern, dark green leathery fronds. This fern tolerates dry conditions. 24-36”height.
