Plants: Dianthus

Dianthus are a group of plants with more than 300 species that range in height from a few inches to a few feet. They have green to blue/gray foliage with very showy medium size 5 petal frilled or pinked flowers. They can be very fragrant and come in many varied colors, and bi-colors from white and shades of pink to the darkest burgundy The barbatus (Sweet William) varieties are good for the back of the border mixed with Phlox and Yarrows while the smaller more delicate varieties such as the Star series make a nice impact when massed in the front of the perennial border or in a rock garden.
