Color and low maintenance is what every gardener wants in their yard. Perennials are a great way to get the color you need and they are relatively easy to maintain. 

June is a great time of the year to install perennials in your yard. Our garden center has many different kinds of perennials in stock. Perennials will add color in the landscape when your shrubs are not blooming. They also come back year after year. Most perennials bloom for a 2-3 week period. Try to incorporate some that bloom at different times of the year so you have a continual bloom cycle. 

The easiest way to get started is by making your bed wider so you can add a row in front of your existing shrubs. Plant spacing is based on variety, and usually is around 12-18” apart. Try to plant in masses for best appeal.  Also plant different kinds so you can get the color you need throughout the year.

Shade or sun dictates what varieties to plant. If you have shady areas plant some hostas. There are so many kinds and there foliage adds colors in dark areas in your yard. If you have a sunny area plant some daylilies. They flower for many weeks throughout the summer. Some stay 8” off the ground and some grow 30” off the ground.  Some of the flowers are fragrant.
