The following are the types of plants to inspect, the pest is what kind of pest you will see in your landscape, and the action is what to do when inspecting your landscape. Back to helpful hints.

Plant	Pest		Action
Andromeda		Andromeda Lacebug	Inspect underside of new growth for nymphs. Treat with K+ Neem Oil if needed.
Arborvitae		Arborvitae Leafminer	Shake bush and look for tiny white moths. Treat with Monterey Garden Insect Spray if needed.
Beech		Woolly Beech Aphid	Treat early before natural enemies arrive with Garden Tech’s Sevin.
Birch		Aphids	Check for natural enemies before making treatment decision.
Boxwood		Boxwood Mite	Inspect for reddish nymphs on underside of leaves. Insecticidal Soaps and Horticultural Oils may require multiple applications.
		Boxwood Psyllids	Inspect tips of new growth for waxy nymphs. Treatment may be too late to prevent damage.
Cherry		Eastern Tent Caterpillar	Inspect for larvae, webs and plant injury.
Crabapple		Eastern Tent Caterpillar	Inspect for larvae, webs and plant injury.
Dogwood		Dogwood Borer	Inspect trunk and large branches for holes and fresh sawdust. Destroy by hand or treat with nematodes.
Euonymus		Euonymus Caterpillar	Inspect tips for yellow larvae and silk. Young larvae vulnerable to Thuricide or Bonide Capt. Jack’s Dead Bug pesticide.
Hardwoods		Cankerworms	Inspect leaves for holes and larvae. Probably too late for Thuricide. Treat with Monterey Garden Insect Spray if needed.
		Forest Tent Caterpillar	Inspect leaves for caterpillars. Probably too late for Thuricide. Treat with Monterey Garden Insect Spray if needed.
		Gypsy Moth	Inspect leaves for holes and larvae. Probably too late for Thuricide. Treat with Bonide Capt. Jack’s Dead Bug if needed.
		Oystershell Scale	Look for white crawlers on newest growth. Treat with All Season’s Spray Oil if needed.
Hemlock		Hemlock Woolly Adelgid	Inspect for cottony masses at base of needles. Treat with All Season’s Spray Oil if needed..
Lilac		Lilac Leafminer	Inspect leaves for hatched larvae. Treat with Bonide Borer-Miner Killer if needed.
Holly		Holly Leafminer	Install yellow sticky traps. Inspect traps for small gray flies. Monterey Garden Insect Spray if needed.
Honeylocust		Honeylocust Plant Bug	Shake branch over white surface. Look for small green nymphs. Treat with Bonide Eight if needed.
		Spruce Spider Mite	Shake branch over white surface. Look for tiny reddish mites. Treat with Bonide Malathion if needed.
Pine		European Pine Sawfly	Inspect needles for dark green larvae. Handpick or treat with Monterey Garden Insect Spray if needed.
		Pine Needle Scale	Inspect needles for red-orange crawlers. Treat with Espoma Earth Tone Insect Control if needed.
& Pine (Soft)		White Pine Weevil	Inspect leaders for holes, sap flow and tip curl. prune out infested leaders.
Pine (Soft)		Pine Bark Adelgid	Inspect trunk and branches for white, cottony masses. Increase vigor, reduce stress. Treat with All Season’s Spray Oil.
Willow		Imported Willow Leaf Beetle	Inspect for small bluish-black beetles and black larvae skeletonizing leaves. Treat with All Season’s Spray Oil if needed.
Yew		Taxus Mealybug	Inspect interior of plants for small mealybugs. Treat with Bonide Eight if needed.
