The following are the types of plants to inspect, the pest is what kind of pest you will see in your landscape, and the action is what to do when inspecting your landscape. Back to helpful hints.

Inspect underside of new growth for nymphs. Treat with Bonide Eight if needed.

Inspect twig crotches for white, waxy females, pinkish eggs and crawlers. Treat with Bonide Malathion if needed.

Birch Aphids

Check for natural enemies before making treatment decision.  If there are no natural enemies use Bayer Sevin.

Examine branch tips for shiny black egg masses and remove.

Inspect trunk and large branches for holes and fresh sawdust. Destroy by hand or treat with nematodes.

Look for white crawlers on underside of leaves or needles. Treat with Espoma Earth Tone Insect Control if needed.

Japanese Beetle

Examine leaves for adults and skeletonizing. Treat with Bonide Malathion or Eight if needed.

Inspect foliage and stems for large, white, waxy scales

Shake branch over white surface. Look for reddish-brown mites and treat with Monterey Garden Insect Spray if needed.

Examine leaves for green, slug-like, larvae. Treat with Bonide Capt. Jack’s Dead Bug if needed.

Pine Red-headed Pine Sawfly

Examine needles for clusters of yellow larvae. Pick off or treat with Bonide Capt. Jack’s Dead Bug if needed.

Pine (Soft) Introduced Pine Sawfly

Inspect needles for grey-green larvae. Pick off or treat with Monterey Garden Insect Spray if needed.

Rhododendron Rhododendron Borer

Inspect large lower branches for holes and fresh sawdust. Destroy by hand or treat with nematodes.

Yew Black Vine Weevil

Check burlap traps for adult weevils. Treat with Bayer Tree & Shrub Insect Control if needed two weeks after first captures.
