Garden Center: Pest Control for Late July to Early August

The following are the types of plants to inspect, the pest is what kind of pest you will see in your landscape, and the action is what to do when inspecting your landscape. Back to helpful hints.

Plant	Pest		Action
Andromeda		Andromeda Lacebug (2nd gen.)	Inspect underside of new growth for nymphs. Treat with Bonide Eight if needed.
Azalea		Azalea Bark Scale	Inspect twig crotches for white, waxy females, pinkish eggs and crawlers. Treat with Espoma Earth Tone Insect Control if needed
Birch		Bronze Birch Borer	Inspect for fresh D-shaped emergence holes and overall health. Treat trunk and branches with Bonide Borer-Miner Killer if needed.
Cherry		Cherry Scallop Shell Moth	Inspect foliage for silken nests and yellowish caterpillars. Prune out or treat with Bonide Capt. Jack’s Dead Bug.
Crabapple		Eastern Tent Caterpillar	Examine branch tips for shiny black egg masses and remove.
Dogwood		Dogwood Borer	Inspect trunk and large branches for holes and fresh sawdust. Destroy by hand or treat with nematodes.
Euonymus		Glover Scale	Look for white crawlers on underside of leaves. Treat with All Season’s Spray Oil if needed.
Fir		Cooley Spruce Gall Adelgid	Look for waxy nymphs on bent needles. Treat with Espoma Earth Tone Insect Control if needed.
Spruce		Cooley Spruce Gall Adelgid
Hardwoods		Fall Webworm	Check tip leaves for eggs and larvae. Prune or treat with Thuricide or Monterey Garden Insect Spray.
		Japanese Beetle	Examine leaves for adults and skeletonizing. Treat with Bonide Malathion if needed.
		Two-Spotted Spider Mite	Strike branch on white surface. Check for white mites.
Hemlock		Hemlock Scale	Look for white crawlers on underside of needles. Treat with All Season’s Spray Oil if needed.
Honeylocust>		Honeylocust Mite	Shake branch over white surface. Look for reddish-brown mites and treat with Bonide Capt. Jack’s Dead Bug if needed.
		Mimosa Webworm	Small, gray-brown larvae webbing leaflets near tips. Prune out or treat with Thuricide or Bonide Capt. Jack’s Dead Bug.
Juniper		Juniper Webworm	Inspect interior foliage for early mines and silken tubes. Treat with Thuricide or Bonide Capt. Jack’s Dead Bug.
Linden		Aphids	Check foliage for nymphs, honeydew, and natural enemies before making treatment decision.
Tulip Poplar		Aphids
Pine		Pine Needle Scale	Look for reddish-orange crawlers on needles. Treat with Espoma Earth Tone Insect Control if needed.
		Red-headed Pine Sawfly	Examine needles for clusters of yellow larvae. Pick off or treat with Monterey Garden Insect Spray if needed.
Rhododendron		Rhododendron Borer	Inspect large lower branches for holes and fresh sawdust. Destroy by hand or treat with nematodes.
		Sharpshooter Leafhopper	Check new growth for large, green and orange leafhoppers. Treat with Bonide Eight if needed.
Tupelo		Tupelo Leafminer	Inspect leaves for eggs and early mines. Treat with Ortho System Insect Killer if needed.
Yew		Black Vine Weevil	Check burlap traps for adult weevils. Treat with Bayer Tree & Shrub Insect Control if needed.
